An impaired driver who fled the scene of an accident couldn’t escape a keen-eyed cab driver, a Bracebridge courtroom heard recently.
Maurice Williams, 55, of Oshawa, pled guilty to several offences, including driving with over 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, taking a vehicle without consent, breaching court orders and other offences.
Court heard that on October 13, 2023, police were contacted after Williams took a vehicle without consent from someone known to him from his workplace.
At roughly 7 pm that day, a concerned citizen called the Bracebridge OPP to report Williams driving the wrong way on Hwy 118 West. The caller said they had to swerve onto the shoulder to avoid a head-on collision. Williams then lost control of his vehicle crashing into the ditch before becoming airborne and crashing into a stand of trees.
Williams fled the scene on foot but left a medication bottle with his name on it. Sometime later Williams called a cab but the cab driver turned out to be a volunteer firefighter who just left the scene of the accident, and the cab driver recognized Williams from the description given by the police.
Williams was arrested and blew a reading of 130 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.
He also pled guilty to other crimes unconnected to the driving offences.
He was sentenced to 119 days in pre-sentence custody and 18 months probation.
