A message from the Bracebridge OPP
Members of the Bracebridge Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding the public about frauds involving online interactions and financial transfers.
The OPP is reminding the public to be aware of the warning signs, never give out any personal information to someone you don’t know, and always verify all contact information. Give yourself time to complete your own search before purchasing an item online, including researching reviews of a business or asking a family member or friend for advice.
Here are a few signs to avoid becoming a victim of fraud:
- The fraudster will want you to give a deposit immediately or pay in full quickly, giving you excuses to instill a sense of urgency to send them money
- The price is suspiciously low compared to typical prices
- The seller requests payment via e-transfer
- The seller doesn’t want to meet you in person
- If the price is too good to be true… It probably is
