A Gravenhurst man who joined others to viciously assault another man over a financial dispute was in a Bracebridge court recently.
Earlier this month Raymond Shaw, 45, pled guilty to assault causing bodily harm and multiple counts of breaching court orders.
Court heard that on Jan 31, 2024, Shaw and several other men went to a residence in Gravenhurst where a verbal dispute occurred regarding a $100 debt. Another man began punching the victim before Shaw and others joined in the assault. The victim was pushed down the stairs and hit in the face with a bottle during the assault, which lasted between 4-5 minutes.
The victim was transported to hospital with significant injuries, including a broken orbital bone and glass lodged in his face.
Shaw, who has a previous criminal record, also pled guilty to breaching court orders on March 14 and March 20 of 2024.
The defence outlined to the court the “deplorable conditions” Shaw had endured since during his incarnation, including the “triple bunking” now increasingly more common at correctional facilities, which necessitates inmates having to step over one another to use the washroom facilities.
The Justice called Shaw’s actions a “shameful gang beating” but agreed Shaw’s conditions in custody were unacceptable.
Shaw was sentenced to 365 days of custody, noted as time served because of the extra credit given for pre-sentence custody. He was also placed on probation for two years.
