Art Fx is a series on South Muskoka Doppler featuring local visual artists.
“Inner Beauty” by Janice Feist is a 36’’ x 48’’, acrylic on canvas.
“They say you can see a horse’s soul through its eyes,” says Feist. “This horse has beauty in his soul. With quiet confidence, his eyes look and take in the beauty of his surroundings.”
“I was raised in rural Ontario, where our family home was surrounded by farmer’s fields. I cannot recall a time that horses haven’t affected me in some manner. Their impact inspired me to recently create an equine series of paintings. I love the sweet aroma of hay in a barn, the scent of a horse; especially when stroking a horse’s neck under its mane, and feeling the softness of a horse’s muzzle in my hand.”
“It would be in my adult years that my perfect dream would come true when I found my own horse. I read somewhere that ‘The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a girl.’ I believe the scent of a horse is an elixir that should have been put in a bottle and sold as cologne. There is a huge possibility that if the first man I met smelled like a horse, I might have married him on the spot.”
About the artist:
Janice Feist is a visual artist.
“The beauty in Muskoka and surrounding areas constantly inspires me,” she says. “My home studio
is embraced by bedrock and forest. The colours, the textures, the scents, the flora and
fauna, all provide me unlimited opportunity for creative visions.”
“I embrace the differences in acrylic, oil, watercolour, ink and soft pastels in my varied
works. Currently my focus is primarily in acrylic, allowing me to paint quickly. My palette
knife is fearless in representing the mood, colour and texture of subjects. This tool
allows me to harness energy, allowing me be free to express myself immediately and
directly.”
She has exhibited in numerous juried and group shows, and had her first solo exhibition
in July 2020.
“Our studio location provides a beautiful scenic backdrop for you to safely visit my outdoor gallery shows during summer weekends, weather permitting,” she says.
