Attack on Gravenhurst driver leads to house arrest

A man who punched and spit on another man who gave him a ride will be spending time under house arrest.

Last week in a Bracebridge court, Jesse Dawson, 32, of Gravenhurst pleaded guilty to assault and breaching court orders.

Court heard that on Dec. 31, 2021 Dawson was at a New Year’s Eve celebration at a Muskoka cottage, when one of the attendees contacted police.

Court heard that Dason’s behaviour had become unruly and he was asked to leave the party. Dawson was intoxicated and another man left the party to offer him  a ride. Dawson got into the car but eventually became confrontational, which led to him spitting on the other man and punching him in the face while he was driving. Court heard the driver eventually managed to push Dawson out of the car but Dawson continued to punch and kick the car as the driver pulled away.

Court heard Dawson has a criminal record, including assault with a weapon, and has also violated court-ordered terms,

Justice Jonathan Bliss accepted a joint position of four months house arrest, followed by two months under curfew and two years of probation.

He added that Dawson should consider himself “exceedingly lucky.”

“Here’s someone trying to give you a hand and you respond by spitting in his face and striking him repeatedly,” said Bliss.
