Award-winning author Deborah Levison will be in Muskoka later this spring to speak about her latest novel, A Novel Crime, a darkly comic thriller that skewers ambition, envy and the high-stakes world of publishing.
Levison is scheduled to appear at the Gravenhurst Opera House on Friday, May 29, for a presentation hosted by the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW). She will also take part in a reading and book signing at Cedar Canoe Books in either Bracebridge or Huntsville, with the final location to be confirmed, over the same weekend.
Set in Connecticut and the Hamptons, *A Novel Crime* follows Marcy Jo Codburn, a struggling romance writer and recent divorcée whose dreams of literary success are slipping away. When Marcy witnesses a celebrated celebrity author in a compromising situation, she sees an opportunity to change her fortunes. Reinventing herself through a bolder alter ego, Marcy leverages the secret into an uneasy collaboration that spirals into deception, mayhem and increasingly dark consequences.
The novel blends satire with suspense, examining friendship, mother-daughter relationships and the pressures facing women in a competitive creative industry. As deadlines loom and schemes unravel — including a kidnapping plot gone wrong — the story builds toward an ending that exposes the personal cost of ambition.
The book has drawn praise from fellow writers for its sharp humour and intricate plotting. Author May Cobb has called it “uproariously funny” and “ingeniously plotted,” while Samantha Bailey described it as a “wickedly hilarious delight.” Thriller writer Gregg Hurwitz said the novel “packs in the drama and tabloid-worthy conniving.”
Levison is the multi award-winning author of the novel *A Nest of Snakes* and the true crime book The Crate. Her life has been shaped by two distinct chapters: growing up in Canada, where she studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music and the University of Toronto, and later settling in Connecticut, where she lives with her family.
Her love of storytelling, she has said, began around a campfire one summer night, listening to the classic ghost story “The Monkey’s Paw” — a memory that still gives her chills and continues to influence her writing.
Levison’s Muskoka appearances will give readers an opportunity to hear about the inspiration behind A Novel Crime, her writing process, and her experience navigating both fiction and true crime. Copies of the book will be available for purchase, and audience members will have a chance to ask questions and meet the author.
