Body of Missing Boater Recovered from Lake Muskoka After Canada Day Incident

Provincial police have recovered the body of a boater who disappeared after falling into Lake Muskoka during severe weather on Canada Day.

Emergency crews from the Bracebridge detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police and the OPP Marine Unit were dispatched to the Sandy Bay area near Bowyers Beach at approximately 5:45 p.m. on July 1 after receiving reports of a person overboard.

According to investigators, a couple was boating on Lake Muskoka when they encountered extreme weather conditions. During the incident, a 67-year-old man fell into the water and failed to resurface.

The woman who remained aboard the vessel issued a distress call, prompting nearby residents to respond in their own boats in an effort to help locate the missing man. Despite their quick response and a coordinated search involving police and marine officers, the man could not be found that evening.

The search resumed the following day, and shortly after noon on Thursday, OPP located and recovered the body of the missing 67-year-old.

Police have not released the man’s identity. No additional information has been provided as the investigation continues.
