Bracebridge driver’s wild shortcut leads to multiple charges

A Bracebridge motorist’s driving landed him in a courtroom recently.

Appearing in Bracebridge court, Mitchell Pate, 18, pled guilty to driving with over 80 mg of alcohol per 100 of blood in his system and failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

Court heard that on Sept 26, 2023 at 9:35 p.m. Pate was driving a truck on Monck Road in Bracebridge approaching the intersection of Monck and Manitoba Street. Before reaching the intersection he cut through a parking lot and over a sidewalk, crashing into another vehicle on Manitoba Street. Court heard that Pate then fled the scene and his truck was found parked and unoccupied roughly three km away.

Pate was located inside a nearby residence and officers formed grounds to suspect Pate was under the influence of alcohol. A breathalyzer provided readings of 160 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood – double the legal limit.

In delivering his sentence, Justice Edward Carlton said Pate’s behaviour posed a “tremendous risk to the public.”

Carlton said in the past few weeks alone he had presided over two similar cases which had resulted in life-altering injuries to the concerned parties.

Pate was sentenced to a $2,000 fine, an 18 month driving ban and 12 months probation
