The Town of Bracebridge is planning a number of improvements for cyclists and picking up provincial recognition along the way.
During the most recent Bracebridge general committee meeting, councilors heard that the town was recently given an honourable mention from the Share the Road Cycling Coalition for the work they’ve been doing to improve conditions for cyclists in the community. The Share the Road Cycling Coalition is a provincial cycling advocacy organization working to build a bicycle-friendly Ontario.
“We have a long way to go towards making our community cycling-friendly but we’re on the right track,” said Coun. Rick Maloney, chair of the Bracebridge Active Transportation Committee.
Maloney pointed out that the Town has now made budgetary commitments towards making the community more cycling friendly. That includes the extension of the Cedar Lane active transportation trail this year and installing bicycle racks on public transportation.
Maloney also pointed out that the Town is currently working on a bike corral initiative. The bike corrals would be set up when there are special events around town in an effort to encourage as many people as possible to ride their bicycles to the events.
Staff advised council that a bike rack has now been purchased for the transit bus. Training and assistance for users will be provided once it is installed and a media release will be issued to the public when available.
