A Bracebridge man has been fined $3,400 and handed a one-year hunting suspension following multiple wild turkey hunting violations that occurred in April 2021.
The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) reported on Friday that the charges stemmed from an investigation that began after the man posted photos on social media showing wild turkeys near a feeder, along with comments suggesting the location was near his home.
The post caught the attention of a conservation officer, who determined that the individual was a licensed turkey hunter for that season. On April 25, 2021 — opening day of wild turkey season — the officer monitored the area behind the man’s residence and observed him leaving his house with an un-encased shotgun before entering a backyard shed.
The officer then made contact with the man and found him in possession of both a loaded crossbow and a shotgun loaded with four shells — a violation of hunting regulations. Additionally, a large pile of corn bait and a trail camera were found facing an open window of the home, less than 400 metres away — another violation of provincial hunting laws.
Further investigation revealed that the man was not carrying his hunting licence or any of the legally required documents while hunting. His firearms — including the improperly loaded shotgun — and crossbow were seized as part of the investigation.
Following multiple court appearances between 2023 and 2024, the man was convicted in Ontario Court of Justice of the following offenses:
- Hunting wild turkey within 400 metres of bait
- Possessing a loaded and un-encased firearm at night
- Failing to carry documentation while possessing a gun
- Hunting without having a licence on his person
- Hunting with a shotgun that was not permanently plugged
In addition to the $3,400 fine, the man is prohibited from possessing an Ontario hunting licence or participating in any hunting activity for a period of one year.
The MNRF reminds all hunters that strict regulations are in place to ensure ethical and sustainable hunting practices and that failure to comply can result in serious legal consequences.
