Bracebridge residents petition for Highway 117 slow down

More than 140 Bracebridge residents are petitioning the Town to decrease the speed limit on Highway 117 from Highway 11 to Stoneleigh Road.

Bracebridge councillors were presented with the petition during the most recent general committee meeting.

The petition was put together by local resident Gary Denniss. In his letter to the committee, he cited council’s recent decision to review traffic safety in the Balls Flats area of town.

“I share their concern but would add that a second area needs a review as well…Muskoka Road 117 especially from Highway 11 to Bonney Lake Road turn,” he said. “It seems this section of the road has fast become an Autobahn for far too many drivers.”

Bracebridge resident Ruth Holtz also sent a letter to council citing her concern for the area.

“Something needs to be done immediately,” she said. “My husband and I have attended two accidents (calling 911 and rendering first aid)… In recent years and we truly fear that someone will lose their life here if action is not taken.”

Several councillors also expressed their concern for safety in the region citing school bus stops, multiple entrances and many heavy trucks travelling the road.

It will now be up to the council as to how to proceed with the request.
