The Town wants to better increase their ability to fight fire and make ice, with a pair of new purchases.
During the latest Bracebridge general committee meeting, councillors took steps towards the acquisition of a new fire tanker truck and an electric ice resurfacer.
According to a staff report, the current ice resurfacer at the Bracebridge Memorial Arena was manufactured with an eight-year or 5,000 operating hour lifespan. Presently the machine has 6,422 hours and is 11 years old, well exceeding its estimated life expectancy.
After receiving three bids via an RFP process, councillors agreed to the supply and delivery of a 2024 electric ice re-surfacer equipped with a laser ice level system, to be delivered to the Muskoka Lumber Community Centre for $117,484. Staff told councillors they will trade in the existing Zamboni unit.
The committee also agreed that an RFP for the purchase of a fire tanker truck should be issued in 2023, in advance of consideration of the draft 2025 Municipal Budget and Business Plan.
According to a staff report, Tanker 8 is scheduled for replacement in 2025. The current truck is a custom-built tanker truck with a water capacity of 1,500 imperial gallons, purchased new in 1999. This truck is well past its anticipated lifespan of 15 years, but due to its fair condition has been kept in service.
Staff are proposing that the tank capacity on replacement tanker trucks be increased from the current 1,500 imperial gallons to 2,500 imperial gallons, as recommended in the Fire Master Plan. Staff in the Fire Department are estimating the costs for the unit to be $675,000.
