A chainsaw carving enthusiast and local business owner is hoping to bring the buzz of chainsaws back to Gravenhurst next year with a proposed multi-day event.
John Kerr of G&J Holdings appeared before Gravenhurst council during its most recent meeting to introduce himself and outline plans for a chainsaw carving event slated for April 17, 18 and 19, 2026. Kerr is the owner of North Side Johnny’s, a business that creates and sells chainsaw carvings and furniture and also presents chainsaw carving events.
Kerr told council he has organized similar events in the Gravenhurst area in the past, but moved south for a period of time. Now back in the community, with his business operating out of its new home in Kilworthy at 1420 Highway 11 North, Kerr said he is eager to once again host an event locally.
The proposed event would feature approximately a dozen chainsaw carvers working over three days. While an exact location has not yet been finalized, Kerr said the event would take place somewhere in Gravenhurst. He noted he has previously hosted chainsaw carving events at several local venues, including Canadian Tire in Gravenhurst, Gull Lake Park and Muskoka Wharf.
Kerr said the purpose of his delegation was to introduce himself to council and to express his interest in working with the town to bring the event to fruition next year. He added that chainsaw carving events tend to attract residents and visitors alike, creating a lively atmosphere and drawing attention to the craft.
Mayor Heidi Lorenz thanked Kerr for his presentation and welcomed the idea of an additional event in the community. She encouraged Kerr to connect with town staff to further discuss potential locations and logistical details for hosting a chainsaw carving event in Gravenhurst.
