Childcare cost control program in effect Jan. 1

As part of the Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) system, which will implement a new fee cap to lower costs for families, the Ontario government will formally take the next step in reducing childcare fees for families next month. Beginning in January, parent fees for children under six enrolled in CWELCC programs will be limited to $22 per day.

According to the provincial government, families will save an additional $300 million in 2025 as a result. Additionally, starting on January 1, the province will implement a new cost-based funding strategy for childcare providers.

The government’s previous “revenue replacement” strategy was in place from 2022 to 2004.

According to the province, cost-based funding gives priority to a simple, uniform system that accurately reflects the actual costs of operating child care.
