The Start2Finish program at Hive Muskoka welcomed a special guest earlier this week.
On May 15th, the program was visited by its founder, Brian Warren, who believes that all children in Canada should have the tools to succeed. Brian, a former CFL Grey Cup Champion and inner-city school teacher, addressed the group about movement, determination, persistence, hard work, and the importance of effort.
Start2Finsh’s mission is to break the cycle of child poverty by providing ongoing educational support to Canada’s at-risk children throughout their school years, nuturing mind, body, and social health so they are empowered to succeed and become role models for change.
As one of the few evidence-based programs in Canada that focuses on the “whole child,” it provides a unique and transformative experience with outcomes in four critical areas of well-being: Physical, Mental, Social-Emotional, and School/Academic.
The R&R Club+ leverages physical activity to empower children to establish a lasting cycle of health and success. The program is grounded in research demonstrating that exercise has a positive impact on children’s cognitive and social skills while reducing stressors they encounter.
It is founded on Positive Education principles to enhance executive functioning skills (such as focus, working memory, self-control) and social-emotional competencies (including resilience, motivation, mindfulness, positivity, relationship management, self-regulation, belonging), thus enabling children to thrive in school and life.
Hive Muskoka is excited to operate this significant program in Muskoka after advocating for it for eight years.
“The need for children to be inspired by words and movement is enormous,” stated Fyonna, highlighting this as a key reason for introducing the program to the award-winning social enterprise gym, Hive Muskoka.
The program serves children in grades 1-6 from four Bracebridge schools once a week after school, supported by generous donations from The Children’s Foundation of Muskoka, Shopper’s Drug Mart, Carpet 1, Muskoka Denturist, and Mission 89, as well as numerous snack contributions from parents.
Participants receive literacy support, complimentary books, running shoes, and free entry to the Color Run on June 15th at Santa’s Village.
