Circle K Robber Pleads Guilty in Bracebridge Court

A 25-year-old man has pleaded guilty to robbing a Circle K convenience store on Main Street in Huntsville earlier this year.

Matthew Black entered his plea in a Bracebridge courtroom this week in connection with an armed robbery that took place on August 19.

Court heard that at about 1:55 a.m., Black entered the Circle K with his face mostly covered by a black mask. He produced a hunting knife and demanded money from the clerk before fleeing the store with $250 in cash.

Investigators later identified Black after a family member recognized him in a news article and contacted police. Court heard the relative told Black he was “famous” before alerting authorities. Black was taken into custody on  Nov. 21. Black appeared to dispute that version of events in court.

The court also heard that Black had been banned from the LCBO due to a separate theft, though that matter was not pursued as part of a global resolution in the current case.

A joint position from the Crown and defence recommended a 72-day jail sentence, in addition to the time Black has already served in pre-trial custody.

However, Justice Edward Carlton expressed concern about the leniency of the proposed sentence.

“This is a very lenient sentence to go into a convenience store and brandish a hunting knife at a defenceless victim,” Carlton said. “I’m going to need some time.”

Sentencing has been adjourned to November 21.
