Construction has begun on the new Mountview sewage pump station.
After years of planning, District of Muskoka director of water and wastewater services Michael Currie told councillors that construction was finally underway.
“We’re at long last underway beginning tomorrow morning bright and early. Very, very excited about it,” Currie said during the Engineering and Public Works Committee on January 17.
The wastewater treatment plant at Mountview has been a concern for several years. The plant has exceeded its operational life and it was clear that it had to be replaced. During the spring and summer months the strong odors emanating from the plant generated complaints from Huntsville residents.
It was decided to replace the treatment at Mountview with a pump station which would direct waste flows to the Golden Pheasant Treatment Plant. In September the District approved a contract with Peak Construction Group LLC to construct a new pump station at a cost of $30,194,900 dollars.
Once construction of this new station is complete, all flows will be directed to the Golden Pheasant Wastewater Treatment Plant across town which the District is in the process of upgrading over a three-phase process.
Currie said the District is still in the process of soliciting and approving applications for construction at the Golden Pheasant Treatment Plant to handle the additional capacity. Currie said that recommendations on this project are expected to be brought to the full District Council in February. Further phases of construction to complete the new setup are being designed by staff with tendering to begin in the next several months.
