Court recap (impaired – careless)

Driving their vehicles into ditches led to a pair of different men pleading guilty in Bracebridge court last week.

James Ball, 41, pled guilty to over 80 mg alcohol per 100 ml of blood and was sentenced to a $1,600 fine and a one year driving ban.

Court heard that on March 18 2021 Ball was driving on Southwood Road in Muskoka Lakes Township when he drifted off the road and became stuck in a ditch. He called a tow truck but when they arrived they observed Ball to be slurring his words and not making any sense.

The OPP were called and found him asleep in the driver’s seat with the vehicle running. They smelled alcohol on his breath and then found an open bottle of vodka in the vehicle.

Ball told the court he had learned an important life lesson and felt lucky he hadn’t injured anyone.

On the same day Lucas Calle, 28, pleaded guilty to careless driving stemming from an incident in Bracebridge.

Court heard that on July 17, 2020, the OPP received a complaint about an erratic driver on Highway 118. By the time police arrived the driver had crashed his car into a ditch and was standing nearby.

He admitted to drinking alcohol and was sentenced to one year with no alcohol in his system while driving, installing an interlock system in his car and paying a $1,000 fine.
