COVID-19 in Simcoe Muskoka: By the numbers

Effective January 12, 2021, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) is no longer providing details on COVID-19 cases by municipality due to the province’s decision to limit testing to only high-risk individuals. This incomplete data would not provide an accurate snapshot of transmission in the community. See below for other regional statistics.

Percent positivity rate (for the week of Jan. 30)

The percentage of completed COVID-19 tests that are positive for the COVID-19 virus during the specified period.

Muskoka: 13.6 per cent

Simcoe County: 12.8 per cent

Ontario: 15.7 per cent

Active hospitalizations in Simcoe Muskoka (as of Feb. 9):

  • 44, including 10 in ICU
  • A weekly snapshot. On Feb. 9, of 44 hospitalizations:
    • Eight are in Muskoka, 34 in Simcoe, two are unknown.
    • 87 per cent are over 50 years.
    • Six are associated with institutional outbreaks.
    • 38 are sporadic cases from the community.
    • 19 (43 per cent) are unvaccinated, one has had a single dose of vaccine, 20 (45 per cent) have had two doses of vaccine, and four have had three doses of vaccine.
    • Two are in ICU in Muskoka, eight in Simcoe County. Five of the 10 have received two doses of vaccine.

COVID-19 deaths in Simcoe Muskoka

For the week ending Feb. 9, there were 27 deaths in Simcoe Muskoka:

  • Muskoka: three
  • Simcoe County: 24
  • Age range: 30s to >100
  • Gender: 18 men, 9 women
  • 14 were associated with institutional outbreaks

Vaccination status of these individuals was not available.

There have been 378 COVID-19 deaths to date in Simcoe Muskoka.

For this period, the rate of COVID-19 hospitalizations among the unvaccinated population aged 12 and older is five times higher, the rate of ICU admissions is 10 times higher, and the rate of deaths is three times higher compared with those with two or more doses of vaccine.
