District staff say councillors should deny a request from Bracebridge to lower the speed limit for a section of Hwy 117. However they will back a request to reduce the speed limit near a new paramedic station on Hwy 118 in Muskoka Lakes Township.
The District of Muskoka’s Engineering and Public Works committee will consider the changes during their Jan 22 meeting.
The District had received a request from the Town of Bracebridge to undertake a speed limit analysis between Highway 11 and Stoneleigh Road.
In 2023 more than 140 Bracebridge residents petitioned the Town to decrease the speed limit on Highway 117 from Highway 11 to Stoneleigh Road. They were concerned that motorists travelled well in excess of the posted limit and multiple accidents had occurred on that section of roadway. Several Bracebridge councillors also expressed concern for safety in the region citing school bus stops, multiple entrances and many heavy trucks travelling the road.
According to the District report:
“The results of the speed limit analysis do not support a reduction in posted speed. Muskoka Road 117 is an arterial, Class A roadway with a primary function for the safe and efficient transportation of people and goods, which supports the current posting of 80 km/h.”
The section of Hwy 118 up for consideration is located near the newly constructed paramedic Station 3 facility located at 3843 #118 West. The current speed limit at this location is 80 km/h, transitioning to 60 km/h approximately 500 metres east of the entrance.
According to staff, recognizing the high frequency of turning traffic expected from the new station, the potential for unexpected traffic stops to accommodate emergency vehicles, and the importance of expedited and safe access to the MPS station, staff are recommending a speed reduction.
