Doorbell camera helps nab car thief

A Muskoka man will serve time under house arrest after recently pleading guilty in a Bracebridge courtroom.

Easton Childerhose, 22, pled guilty to possessing a stolen vehicle and breaching probation.

Court heard that in September of 2023, Huntsville OPP received a call regarding a stolen vehicle. A homeowner reported a “cargo-style” vehicle had been stolen from his property. The victim provided Ring camera footage which showed two males stealing the vehicle.

On Sept. 20 an off-duty officer saw the stolen vehicle parked at a motel in Bracebridge. The officer knocked on the door, which a woman opened, but the officer also observed Childerhose Inside and recognized him from the Ring footage. He was subsequently arrested and released on bail.

On Oct. 3, 2023, Childerhose was arrested again for breaching the terms of his probation. Court heard Childerhose went near a woman he had been ordered to stay away from, causing her to fear for her safety.

The Crown and defense put forward a joint position for a 120-day conditional sentence and 12 months probation but the Justice was not initially receptive.

He questioned why a conditional sentence was being considered for an offender with an entire page of offences that include trespassing at night, criminal harassment and a variety of other charges.

The Crown said there were some triable issues with the case and Childerhose has stayed out of trouble since his most recent release.

The judge ultimately agreed to the joint sentence.

And this is why we have an auto theft problem…this should’ve been a minimum 2 years behind bars.
