Drone-flying drug smuggler ends up behind bars

A plot to fly drugs into a Gravenhurst prison via drone came crashing down thanks to a keen-eyed citizen.

Appearing from jail via Zoom, Hussain Al-Naqeeb, 35,  pled guilty in a Bracebridge courtroom to possession of MDMA for the purpose of trafficking.

Court heard that on Feb. 25, 2023, police received a call from a concerned citizen regarding a suspicious person in a vehicle on Reay Road in Gravenhurst with a drone near Beaver Creek Inustion.

When the police arrived to investigate they saw the driver throw several items out of the window. The driver was arrested and inside the vehicle police found multiple packages wrapped in cellophane and tied with fishing line. They also recovered several of the items thrown out of the window. They included a drone and remote control, narcotics, two cell phones and six SIM cards. In total police recovered 43 g of marijuana, 56 g of shatter cannabis and 41.9 grams of MDMA.

Court heard Al-Naqeeb has a criminal record including a previous conviction for trafficking.

A joint position was put forward for 10 months of house arrest and two months under curfew. Justice Anastasia Nichols said she felt the proposal was so low it potentially fell outside the spectrum of an acceptable sentence. However, she “reluctantly” agreed to accept the sentence.
