During a recent hearing a Bracebridge courtroom dealt with the ever-increasing problem of drones being used to smuggle contraband into local correctional facilities
Mohamed Ajoul of Quebec pled guilty during a recent court appearance to attempting to distribute more than 30g of marijuana and breaching the terms of his probation.
Court heard that on Jan. 11, 2024, the Bracebridge OPP received a call for service to Beaver Creek Institution in Gravenhurst. The caller said a drone had dropped off a package in the prison and they believed it had been flown from nearby Reay Road area.
The police pulled over a pickup truck on Reay Road and found a drone inside. They also found a quantity of cash in the car in Euros, US and Canadian dollars. The package dropped off in the prison contained nine packages containing 50 g of tobacco each, several sim cards and 209 g of cannabis.
Ajoul was on probation at the time of the offence.
Ajoul was given a suspended sentence and placed on 18 months probation.
