EXAMPLES OF RESPONSES AFTER PARTNER PREEMPTS AT THE THREE LEVEL
Last week we reviewed the opening Preemptive Three Bid. The objective of the Preemptive Three Bid is to inform partner of a weak hand but one with at least a seven-card suit. You, responding partner, may have a good hand. This week we have examples of some hands where you must consider whether or not to respond to opening partner’s Three Bid after right-hand opponent passes.
Case 1:
Spades xx
Hearts xx
Diamonds KQJx
Clubs KQJxx
Case 1: Your partner opens Three Spades. You know he is weak. You have a good hand for Spades but not enough strength for game. You PASS.
Case 2:
Spades xxxx
Hearts xxx
Diamonds KQJ
Clubs Kxx
Case 2: Again your partner opens One Spade. You have only nine points but you know you probably have an eleven card fit in Spades. You also know that the opponents have most of the points. This time you extend the preempt and bid Four Spades. You will probably go down but still get a better score than letting the opponents go for a contract.
Case 3:
Spades AQxx
Hearts Qxxx
Diamonds K
Clubs KQJx
Case 3: Partner opens Three Clubs. Your right-hand opponent passes. With seventeen points, you know you and partner probably have enough strength for a game but the 3NT game is more dangerous than Five Clubs. You raise to Five Clubs.
