Examples of when to Super Accept partner’s transfer your 1NT opening

Last week we introduced Super Accept. It is the second bid by you after your 1NT opener and partner’s Transfer bid of either Two Hearts or Two Diamonds.

The objective of the Super Accept is to inform partner of your four-card support for his suit. Your responding partner also may have a good hand so your jump bid in his suit gives him a chance to pursue the best contract. This week we have examples of hands where you consider whether or not to Super Accept partner’s Transfer. You Super Accept with a jump to Three Hearts or Three Spades.

Case 1:

Spades     xxxx

Hearts      AJ

Diamonds    KQJ

Clubs         KQJx

Case 1:  You open this hand 1NT with 17 points.  Partner bids Two Hearts Transfer to Spades. You know he could be strong enough for game or he could have zero points for his Transfer. You have a good hand with four-card Spade support. You Super Accept with a jump to Three Spades. Depending on the strength of partner’s hand, he will take the contract to Four Spades or to slam or PASS for a part score contract of Three Spades.

Case 2:

Spades     xxxx

Hearts      AJ

Diamonds    KJx

Clubs         KQJx

Case 2: Again you open 1NT. But this time you have only 15 points. Partner again transfers to Spades by bidding Two Hearts. You are not strong enough to Super Accept so you just complete the Transfer with a bid of Two Spades. You will go on to the Spade game if partner bids again.

Case 3:

Spades     xxxx

Hearts      AJ

Diamonds    KJX

Clubs         KQJx

Case 3: This hand is the same as Case 2 but you treat it differently by partnership agreement. Again you open 1NT with 15 points. Again partner bids Two Hearts Transfer to Spades. This time you do a Super Accept, Three Spades. You Super Accept with the weaker hand because you have a nine-card Spade fit with your partner. By the LAW of Total Tricks you can go safely to Three Spades.

For more information, Google “Super Accept”.

Next Week: More Examples when you and your partner could use Super Accept.

If you wish to promote an activity in your Bridge group or ask a Bridge question, send the information to vrhead23@gmail.com and I will try to include it in this column.

Remember, as we all fight COVID-19 with social isolation, if you want your Bridge fix, online competition is available for all skill levels. From the ACBL Bridge website, you can hook up either to play live people or to play robots. Either way you test or consolidate various Bridge skills. At ACBL.org just click on “Play Bridge” and follow the prompts for various choices.
