SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH: Bracing for Impact – A Debut Fictional Novel Inspired by Actual Events
DESCRIPTION:Former Ontario correctional officer and author JC Kors launches her debut novel\, a raw and gripping debut novel. Bracing for Impact\, is a  powerful story of resilience\, survival\, and one woman’s fight to prove she belongs in the toughest place imaginable: an all-male maximum-security prison. Drawing from her extensive three-decade career in Canada’s prison system\, JC provides readers with a rare insight behind the walls\, merging emotional truth with dynamic storytelling. At the core of the novel is Revena Miller\, a divorced housewife resolutely aiming to rebuild her life by entering one of society’s most perilous professions. \nThis story offers an unfiltered and deeply human look at what it means to be a woman breaking barriers in a brutal\, male-dominated world. Bracing for Impact is more than just a prison story. It’s about transformation\, courage and the ethical tightrope walked by those on the front lines\, says the author. “I wrote Bracing for Impact to shine a light on the often-overlooked correctional officers who stand between chaos and control. Through this story\, I hope to give voice to their reality. Prison changes everyone—especially those who carry the keys. \nBracing for Impact is currently available on Amazon and Kindle. For interviews\, media appearances\, or book club inquiries\, please contact [author.jckors@gmail.com]. \nA Book Launch will be held on June 22\, 2025 from 1-4 pm at Sawdust City Brewing Company\, 397 Muskoka Road N\, Gravenhurst\, ON \nThank you for supporting new voices in Canadian literature!

SUMMARY:Detective to Author: The Realities Behind Crime Fiction with Author\, Desmond P. Ryan
DESCRIPTION:Join Muskoka Authors Association on Thursday\, June 12 for an exciting presentation by crime fiction writer\, Desmond P. Ryan. Ryan will share stories and insights from almost thirty years of experience as a Toronto Police detective\, exploring how real-life investigations and police work have influenced his crime fiction writing. Drawing from firsthand experience\, Desmond will discuss how the details of criminal investigations—from procedure to human behavior—shape stories that connect with readers. \nThrough The Mike O’Shea Series\, a gripping police procedural\, Desmond brings the authenticity of detective work to life\, rooted in real-world details. On the lighter side\, A Pint of Trouble takes readers into the world of cozy mysteries\, where a mildly Machiavellian amateur sleuth solves murders with humor and charm. \nThis talk will offer a unique behind-the-scenes look at the balance between fact and fiction\, showing how firsthand knowledge of police work can create both intense\, realistic thrillers and fun\, character-driven mysteries. Whether you’re a writer\, reader\, or just curious about the link between fact and fiction\, you’ll walk away with new insights into the art of crafting crime fiction that resonates with authenticity\, no matter the tone. \nAs a police detective\, Ryan worked in some of the city’s toughest and most challenging neighborhoods. His experience on the frontlines of law enforcement—dealing with everything from routine investigations to high-risk operations—gives his crime fiction a raw\, unflinching authenticity. Whether he’s digging into the dark\, gritty world of policing in The Mike O’Shea Series or spinning a more offbeat mystery in A Pint of Trouble\, Desmond Ryan’s writing pulls no punches. His stories reflect the harsh realities of crime\, the toll it takes on those who fight it\, and the flawed humanity of everyone involved. Desmond Ryan’s characters—complicated\, sometimes broken\, but always real—are shaped by years spent on the streets\, making his books as hard-edged as the world they depict. \nLocation: Bracebridge United Church\, 46 Dominion Street\, Bracebridge\, lower level. Enter by door on the southside driveway. \nTime: 7:00 – 9:00 pm. SUMMARY:Five Ways Writing Short Stories Help You Grow as a Writer with Author/Book Coach\, Dallas Woodburn
DESCRIPTION:Writers and book lovers are invited by Muskoka Authors Association to a special Zoom event with award-winning author\, editor\, and book coach Dallas Woodburn\, on Wednesday\, February 25 at 7:00 pm. Woodburn’s career spans more than two decades and began with publishing her first children’s book at just ten years old. During this Zoom event\, the author will share practical insights and encouragement for writers\, including: Five ways writing short stories helps you grow as a writer; Why a ten-year journey from first manuscript to first published novel can be a gift; How to create a nurturing\, sustainable writing routine through every season of life. This event offers inspiration\, honesty\, and actionable guidance for writers at any stage of their creative journey. \nWoodburn’s early passion for storytelling led to extraordinary success: her self-published childhood book sold thousands of copies and received a glowing review in the Los Angeles Times. By high school\, she was already working as a freelance writer and columnist\, with work appearing in Family Circle\, The Writer\, Writing Magazine\, and Chicken Soup for the Soul. She later studied Creative Writing in both college and graduate school\, earning the prestigious John Steinbeck Fellowship in Creative Writing. \nNearly a decade after completing the manuscript\, Woodburn’s short story collection\, How to Make Paper When the World is Ending\, is forthcoming from Koehler Books—a testament to her belief in patience\, persistence\, and creative growth. In addition to her own writing\, Woodburn now works as a book coach and editor\, helping writers at all stages bring their stories to life. \nHer debut young adult novel\, The Best Week That Never Happened (April 2020)\, was named Grand Prize Winner of the Dante Rossetti Book Award in Young Adult Fiction\, with Kirkus Reviews calling it “a dazzling\, emotional story of love\, loss\, and living in the moment.” Her most recent YA novel\, Thanks\, Carissa\, For Ruining My Life\, was published earlier this year by Immortal Works. Her third novel\, Before & After You & Me\, is forthcoming from Owl Hollow Press. Woodburn is also working on a nonfiction book\, 1\,001 Ways to Be Kind\, inspired by a year-long commitment to weekly acts of kindness\, to be published by Familius Publishing. \nFEE: \nMAA Members: Free\nNon-Members: $20 \nREGISTER TO ATTEND:  Email and etransfer fee to info@muskokaauthors.ca\nZoom information will be emailed to all registrants.
