Bracebridge Town councillors want a review of the section of Hwy 118 which runs through the Balls Flats area of town.
The move comes after a fatal motorcycle collision occurred in the area on Aug. 20.
“The whole stretch of road has been an area of concern for some time,” said Coun. Don Smith, who brought the proposal forward during the latest meeting of the Bracebridge general committee. “I think there are options and ways for calming and safety features to be added.”
The road is technically the responsibility of the District of Muskoka so the proposal was to request the District investigate safety along a stretch of road beginning at Manitoba Street to just over one km down Hwy 118.
Mayor Rick Maloney agreed that the section of road has been busy for a number of years. Traffic will only increase as the community continues to grow, he said, and the completion of the Muskoka Lumber Community Centre nearby will add to the congestion.
It was also pointed out that with Monck Public School, Monsignor Michael O’Leary Catholic School and Bracebridge Public School, all within blocks of the area, the need for increased safety was even greater.
Coun. Archie Buie pointed out that he felt the pedestrian crossing at that section of Hwy 118 does not allow enough time for everyone to cross. He wanted it added to the motion that all changes comply with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act
The committee agreed unanimously to pass the motion onto the District level for consideration.
