Fenbrook contraband delivery lands man in court

An Ottawa man pleaded guilty in Bracebridge court last week for attempting to deliver contraband to a prison in Gravenhurst.

Tholfikar Kadhum, 25, pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis for the purpose of distribution.

Court heard that on May 15, 2020, at roughly 9:43 pm the Bracebridge OPP received a call regarding someone who had thrown a package over the fence at Fenbrook Institution in Gravenhurst, and then ran off into the bush.

When the police arrived they found Kadhum in a vehicle with another person. Kadhum was soaking wet, covered in mud and tree branches and the suspects were unable to tell the police clearly where they were going.

The packages were ultimately recovered and found to contain 150 g of marijuana, 200 grams of tobacco and several USB chargers.

The defence told the court that Kadhum is a refugee from Iraq who had become addicted to drugs and subsequently became, “a pawn in a much larger game,”  searching for money to fuel his addiction.

A joint sentence was put forward and accepted for 90 days of house arrest.
