Flood Watch Continues on Severn River, Sparrow Lake

The Ministry of Natural Resources’ Bracebridge-Minden-Parry Sound District has issued a Flood Warning for the French River and Pickerel River, while a Flood Watch remains in effect for the Severn River system, including Sparrow Lake.

The advisory, issued Wednesday at 11:30 a.m., will remain in effect until May 22.

The warning applies to portions of the Districts of Parry Sound and Muskoka within the French, Pickerel and Severn watersheds.

Officials say water levels and river flows are gradually decreasing in many areas, with some locations beginning to stabilize. However, several areas continue to experience elevated conditions, with water levels in some locations comparable to those seen during the 2019 flooding event.

Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas are urged to continue protecting vulnerable property and monitor changing conditions closely.

The MNR is also warning residents and outdoor enthusiasts to use extreme caution around waterways and forest access roads, many of which may be damaged or impassable due to washouts and seasonal conditions. Fast-moving cold water and slippery banks continue to pose significant safety risks.

The seven-day forecast calls for daytime highs between 12°C and 20°C, overnight lows of 4°C to 12°C, and up to 20 mm of rainfall, which could worsen conditions in vulnerable areas.

Officials recommend residents monitor local forecasts and updates from Ontario’s Surface Water Monitoring Centre and Environment Canada.
