Former WWII sub-hunter marks Canada Day in Muskoka

A rare and remarkable aircraft is set to touch down in Muskoka as part of Canada Day celebrations.

The historic World War II patrol bomber Canso (formerly known as RCAF 11094) is currently on a cross-country tour and will land at the Muskoka Airport in Gravenhurst on July 1st.

The Canso served as a submarine hunter and was used for search and rescue operations flying over the North Atlantic during World War II.

After the war, the aircraft became one of the first to convert into a water bomber. It has helped to fight fires across the country and is one of the few remaining airworthy examples of this type of aircraft.

The aircraft was repainted after World War II, and its distinctive orange and green colours represent the province of Newfoundland where it was repainted during its conversion into an air tanker.

The Canso flew out of its home base in Fairview, Alberta on Father’s Day and has many stops across the country before it turns around in Halifax.

On Canada Day there will be a ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. at the Muskoka Airport with veterans and dignitaries in attendance.

A public onboarding of the Canso will take place between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., where members of the public will be allowed to meet the crew and view the aircraft.

Admission is by donation.
