Residents across Muskoka are being advised to prepare for a significant weather event that could bring freezing rain, heavy rainfall and possible power outages beginning tonight and continuing through Wednesday.
Environment Canada has issued special weather statements for several communities including Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Huntsville and Baysville, warning that a series of low-pressure systems could bring hazardous conditions to parts of central Ontario.
In the Bracebridge and Gravenhurst area, forecasters say residents could see 20 to 40 millimetres of rain along with periods of freezing rain. Ice accumulation of two to five millimetres is possible.
Further north in the Huntsville and Baysville area, a prolonged period of freezing rain is expected, with ice accretion of five to 10 millimetres possible.
The weather system is expected to begin late tonight or early Wednesday morning and could continue through Wednesday evening or Wednesday night.
Environment Canada says temperatures will hover near the freezing mark, meaning precipitation could shift back and forth between rain and freezing rain in some areas.
Ice buildup of several millimetres could weigh down tree branches and power lines, increasing the risk of falling branches and widespread power outages. Heavy precipitation may also lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas, particularly if freezing rain falls heavily and does not immediately freeze on contact.
Officials say freezing rain warnings or rainfall warnings may be issued as the system approaches.
