Each month South Muskoka Doppler highlights a student in the co-op programs at both Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School (BMLSS) and Gravenhurst High School (GHS).
This month’s student of the month for GHS brought to you by Stevenson Plumbing-Electrical-HVAC is Nathan Aldom.
Nathan is on a full-day co-op placement at Muskoka Boat Gallery (MBG) working as a marine engine technician.
“I fell into it. I worked at another marina where I met a marine tech named Corey Lee who taught me a lot,” he says. “We kept in contact when he took on a new job, so I am working with him there now and learning a lot from him because he’s good at what he does.”
Nathan says he loves being outdoors and has always worked In marinas – yard guy, moving boats, blocking to store, taking off trailers, wrapping unwrapping, interior detail and buffing and waxing. He’s looking forward to continuing to deepen his ability to do service calls on the lake and at the marina where he’ll diagnose and fix problems, grab parts, spark plugs and oil, do tow calls for boats taking on water and get to know the clients.
He says the staff at MBG have made him feel comfortable because they were so welcoming and ready to teach him. He’s already learning about gel coats, which is new to him, and he’s looking forward to opening boats in boathouses when the lakes open up.
Nathan says he picked this pathway because of the awesome opportunity for training as he heads into post-secondary.
He is signing as an Ontario Youth Apprentice (OYAP) in Marine Engine Technician as part of his co-op, and hopes to complete his trade school at Georgian College at the Midland campus this fall.
Muskoka Boat Gallery also plans to send him to Ilmor Engines in Mooresville North Carolina and Mastercraft School in Tennessee this fall. He says he likes that he’ll be able to travel for training but also take on amazing opportunities that are still close to home.
Nathan will also service the new RADIN electric surfboards available at Muskoka Boat Gallery that we’re sure to see on the lakes this summer.
