Gravenhurst Council approves up to $200,000 for new Health Hub development

The Gravenhurst Health Hub is one step closer to realization, as recent developments indicate significant progress. During the latest Gravenhurst town council meeting, Bruce Hemphill, chair of the Gravenhurst Health Hub, shared updates about the project, including details on upcoming fundraising efforts.

The initiative aims to transform the available second floor space—approximately 12,000 square feet—of the medical center adjacent to the Gravenhurst municipal office. Hemphill emphasized that the new hub will serve multiple purposes once it is operational, including providing turnkey office space for new primary care providers, enhancing access to specialists, and facilitating new programs focused on geriatrics, diabetes education, and women’s health.

The project is slated to unfold in three phases, with completion anticipated by 2027. The initial phase involves finalizing design plans, securing tenants, and building out the infrastructure for the second floor, along with launching a fundraising campaign. This first phase is projected to cost around $780,000.

Later in the meeting, the council unanimously passed a resolution to allocate up to $200,000 from the Terence Haight Reserve Fund to support the hub’s establishment.

A report from Town staff highlighted that there are over 6,000 residents in South Muskoka (Bracebridge and Gravenhurst) without a local primary care provider. Furthermore, there are currently no standardized after-hour services for unattached patients in Gravenhurst, compelling residents and visitors to seek care at clinics or emergency departments in Orillia, Bracebridge, and other areas.

Mayor Lorenz expressed the town’s commitment to backing the project, underscoring its potential to significantly enhance health services for the community.
