Gravenhurst council wants to restrict short term rentals

At the Nov. 16 Committee of the Whole meeting, council received a report regarding short-term rentals and survey results from community stakeholders. The top concerns cited were noise/partying and disregard for safe fire practices. The report directed staff to begin a licensing program.

In discussion, deputy mayor Lorenz said that it was “unfortunate that we are here” but issues surrounding short-term rentals were reality. Mayor Kelly said he receives at least one phone call per week–from different people–to make complaints about behaviour at short-term rentals.

Council agreed that whatever program is put in place, that those who follow the rules and are good neighbours should find the process easy and inexpensive to navigate.
