Gravenhurst Driver Could Face Deportation Following Impaired Crash

A Gravenhurst man who was found guilty following a trial has been sentenced in Bracebridge court after driving while nearly three times the legal alcohol limit.

Rajubhai Patel, 37, of Gravenhurst, was convicted of impaired operation and operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit.

The charges stemmed from an incident in which police responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a vehicle that struck a fence. Officers attended the scene and arrested Patel.

During the trial, the court heard that video evidence showed Patel swerving into oncoming traffic before striking the curb twice prior to the collision. The footage was entered as evidence by the Crown.

The court also heard that Patel provided breath samples registering just under three times the legal alcohol limit.

At sentencing in the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge, Patel was ordered to serve 60 days of house arrest and was prohibited from driving for 18 months.

The court further heard that, because Patel is not a Canadian citizen, the conviction could have significant immigration consequences. Evidence presented indicated he is facing deportation, which could require him and his family to leave Canada.
