Gravenhurst inmate convicted of trafficking meth from prison

A Beaver Creek inmate added more time to his sentence after pleading guilty to drug trafficking recently.

Appearing virtually in a Bracebridge courtroom, Michael Smith, 30, of Muskoka, pled guilty to possession of crystal methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking.

The court heard that Smith is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence at Beaver Creek Institution in Gravenhurst.  On April 16, 2023, staff at the facility did a search of Smith which turned up 16 packages containing 13.9 grams of crystal meth, as well as some tobacco and cannabis. They also discovered a debt list and a cut open ball. Tennis balls are sometimes sliced open and filled with contraband before being thrown over the fence into the facility.

Smith was sentenced to an additional 15 months to be served at the end of his current sentence.
