A Gravenhurst man who previously threatened to kill store employees, probation officers and family members added to his criminal record earlier this month.
Appearing in a Bracebridge court, Travis Gostick, 34, pled guilty to uttering death threats.
Court heard that on Jan 19, 2024, the Bracebridge OPP received a call from a staff member of the District of Muskoka. The employee said Gostick had emailed her saying he wasn’t being given enough money and he was “going to kill someone.”
The Crown attorney told the court that Gostick has a long criminal record that includes multiple convictions for death threats, assault, theft and other offences. They requested six to nine months in jail.
The defense said the sentence should be less as conditions in local correctional facilities have become deplorable with “triple bunking” now the norm and inmates having to step over one another to use the washroom.
The Justice called the jail conditions completely unsatisfactory.
“In my view, it’s a reflection of our justice system,” he said.
Gostick was sentenced to 180 days in jail and 12 months probation.
