A Gravenhurst man has been sentenced after pleading guilty to arson and making false reports to emergency services following a series of incidents at a Bracebridge motel.
Shane Jones, 53, of Gravenhurst, recently pleaded guilty in a Bracebridge court to arson causing damage by fire and public mischief by falsely reporting a break and enter.
Court heard that on Dec. 22, 2024, Bracebridge Ontario Provincial Police and emergency medical services responded to a motel on Manitoba Street after receiving a call from Jones. When emergency crews arrived, Jones refused assistance.
The court was told emergency services were contacted roughly 20 times throughout the evening and into the following morning. During one of those calls, Jones reported a break and enter; however, police later determined no such incident had occurred.
At approximately 2 a.m. on Dec. 23, emergency crews were again dispatched to the same motel after another person reported seeing smoke and fire coming from beneath the door of Jones’ room.
Police attended and instructed Jones to exit through a window, but he refused. Officers were ultimately forced to breach the door, at which point Jones was arrested.
Jones was placed under house arrest for eight months and given 16 months probation.
