Parking tickets issued during a shuffleboard tournament have led to rule changes in Gravenhurst.
During their latest meeting, Gravenhurst council passed a motion allowing extended parking times on First Street in front of the Gravenhurst Seniors Centre.
In the motion, council directed staff to report back with an amendment to the parking bylaw, identifying the extended spots on First Street, from Church Street to Winewood Avenue, for council’s consideration.
Council received correspondence from Lorne Robertson of the Gravenhurst Seniors Centre regarding parking time limits. On behalf of the centre, he requested that the three-hour parking limit be removed on First Street, from Church Street to Winewood Avenue.
Robertson said the limit interferes with events at the centre – things such as anniversaries, celebrations of life, and birthday parties that tend to run longer than three hours.
Coun. Penny Vareny said the request came as the result of a recent incident at the Seniors Centre. Guests from a number of communities attended the venue for a shuffleboard tournament, only to find all those who had parked on First Street received parking tickets.
“They spoke with bylaw and the tickets were ripped up but it was very embarrassing for the seniors board,” said Varney.
Director of Development Services Melissa Halfod clarified that the tickets were issued in error and they are working with by law to correct any issues.
Coun. Randy Jorgensen expressed concerns that the parking spots could be misused as new residential units are planned for the area.
Staff will report back on the current rules and the changes.
