A Gravenhurst man who stole everything from binoculars and guitars to cash and jewelry had to answer to a Bracebridge judge recently.
Randy Shanks, 34, pleaded guilty to a range of charges including theft, possession of stolen property, mischief, break and enter, and breaking court orders. The incidents occurred in June, July, September of 2023, and November of 2022.
Court heard that on Nov. 7, 2022 a break-in was reported at Currie’s Music on Muskoka Road in Gravenhurst. Three men smashed their way into the store and stole several guitars, valued at just over $1,000. Following the break-in, the owner of the store began sleeping in his establishment to keep tabs on the business, court heard
On November 9, the owner witnessed two men walking down the street just after 4 am carrying bags and boxes. Shortly thereafter he heard the sound of smashing glass and witnessed the men smashing in the front window of Gem & Dia Jewelry store, also located on Muskoka Road.
The witness called the police and the men ran away but not before stealing more than $10,000 worth of merchandise. The witness identified one of the men, and the police subsequently arrested Shanks and two other men.
In July of 2023, Shanks was arrested again after multiple people in the Lawrence Street and Oriole Crescent areas reported their vehicles had been broken into and items taken. Stolen items included sunglasses, cash, binoculars, visa, debit and gift cards and the ownership of a vehicle.
Shanks has been arrested for breaking into cars previously in 2022 and 2020.
During his most recent appearance, Shanks was sentenced to 270 days in jail less time served in pre-trial custody.
