Accessibility Advisory Committee 2023 goals
Ralph Culham, Chair of the Accessibility Advisory Committee, presented to council their goals and work plan for the year. The committee set out five goals: Review and report on the 2022 accessibility survey, to continue to advocate and educate for an accessible community, participation in Town events, ongoing review of capital project plans for public spaces and to review of the accessibility of Wharf area.
In their report, it states that the committee will “review the potential for an accessible lift at the Muskoka Wharf,” and report back to council in the fourth quarter.
Route name changed to Firefly Lane
A request to council to approve a request to re-name Fire Route 1C to “Firefly Lane Private” sparked questions regarding the process of naming roads in general at the Feb. 14 Committee of the Whole meeting.
Councillor Jorgensen asked if there was a formal process for re-naming road: “do we react if someone puts in a request?” He also pointed out that there are fire roads all over with names like “1C or C1…most people can’t really identify them and asked “is there a desire among the Town to improve those names because they don’t mean anything to anybody in general?”
Director of Infrastructure Andrew Stacey replied that there is a rough process, one person could initiate the process, it would then go to the public for input and then go to council with any concerns and ask for direction and next steps. He said that it’s not something that has come up very often. Council voted in favour of the name change.
Climate Change Task Force appointees
Council passed a resolution officially naming Karen Moyer as the representative for Gravenhurst on the District of Muskoka Climate Change Mitigation Task Force. Brad Pettersone will be the Town’s alternate member on the task force. Both Moyer and Pettersone also sit on the Town’s Sustainability Advisory Committee.
