The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) has issued a Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety bulletin for the Muskoka River and Magnetawan River watersheds, warning residents and visitors to exercise caution around local waterways due to elevated water levels and flows.
The advisory remains in effect until June 19 at 11:59 p.m. and applies throughout the Bracebridge-Minden-Parry Sound District, including portions of Muskoka, Parry Sound and Haliburton.
Areas experiencing elevated water levels and flows include Lake Muskoka, Lake Rosseau, the Moon River and Bala Reach, Lake Cecebe, Ahmic Lake, and sections of the watershed downstream of Ahmic Lake.
The MNR is urging boaters, waterfront property owners and visitors to use extreme caution near dams, noting that recent high-water conditions may have affected safety booms, signage, barriers and other safety features.
Residents in areas that have experienced flooding in the past are encouraged to continue protecting vulnerable property and closely monitor changing conditions. Lower-lying sections of flood-prone areas may experience varying degrees of flooding.
The ministry is also warning outdoor enthusiasts to be cautious when using forest access roads. Seasonal conditions, including washouts and other damage, may have rendered some roads impassable.
Fast-flowing water, slippery banks and elevated water levels can create hazardous conditions around rivers, streams and lakes. The MNR reminds residents and visitors to monitor weather forecasts, stay informed of updated advisories, and maintain close supervision of children and pets near water.
The ministry continues to monitor weather patterns and watershed conditions and says additional updates will be issued if necessary.
