Impaired driver crashes through guard rail, car catches fire

A Huntsville driver was lucky to walk away from a drunk driving crash, a Bracebridge court heard recently.

Jeffery Xavier, 49, recently pled guilty to driving with over 80mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.

Court heard that on April 15, 2023, Huntsville OPP received a call at roughly 11:30 am about a driver on Muskoka Road 3 North.

The caller said a CRV had been making a left-hand turn but had crashed through a barrier and into the ditch. The vehicle then caught fire and the driver was able to get out.

When police arrived they saw the suspect, Xavier, walking away from the crash. When they attempted to catch up to him he tried to flee but had difficulty running, court heard.

Xavier was arrested and ultimately blew readings of 259 mg of alcohol, more than triple the legal limit.

He was fined $2,000, banned from driving for 18 months and given one year probation.
