An impaired Huntsville driver, pulled over while dragging a street sign under his car, was in a Bracebridge court recently.
Ethan Bast, 21, recently pled guilty to driving with over 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood in his system.
Court heard that on June 24, 2023, at 8:08 am members of the Huntsville OPP were outside the detachment, which is near the Hwy 11 exit at Ravenscliffe Road, when they saw a white car driving through the tall grass beside the highway offramp at high speed. Court heard the vehicle hit the ramp and became completely airborne before landing back on the road. The car then struck a road sign and continued driving with the road sign and the attached pole stuck under the car.
The police caught up with the driver, who nearly hit another motorist before being pulled over, court heard.
Bast still had the road sign and pole stuck under his vehicle when he was stopped and court heard he smelled of alcohol.
He ultimately blew a reading of 194 mg per 100 ml of blood, more than twice the limit, and he was also found to be a G2 driver.
His defence lawyer Matthew Giesinger disputed that the car was ever fully airborne.
Bast was sentenced to a $2,500 fine, a one-year driving ban and 12 months of probation.
