Impaired drivers plead guilty in Bracebridge

A pair of motorists were in a Bracebridge courtroom recently to plead guilty to unrelated impaired driving offences.

Tyler Zylstra, 33, pled guilty to refusing to provide a breath sample and John McLeod, 63, pled guilty to driving with over 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood in his system.

Court heard that on June 25, 2023, Bracebridge OPP were on patrol on Hwy 118 when a license plate reader came up with an alert on a vehicle at 1:24 am. Police pulled the vehicle over and smelled alcohol coming from the driver, McLeod.

They also found beer cans in the driver’s side door. McLeod took a breathalyzer and blew a reading of 220 mg.

Court heard McLeod has a record of previous impaired driving convictions.

He was sentenced to 60 days in jail, to be served on weekends, a three-year driving ban and 12 months probation.

In the second incident, court heard that police received a call for service at 12:49 am on Aug. 11, 2024.

Court heard a motorist, later identified as Zylstra, had hit a parked car before driving away and crashing into a ditch. When police arrived Zylstra refused to provide a breath sample.

He was given a one-year driving ban, 12 months probation and fined $2,500.
