Inmates attempted escape using makeshift tennis-racket snowshoes

Rodney Cobb has pled guilty in a Bracebridge courtroom to escaping from lawful custody following a brief but unusual getaway attempt from Beaver Creek Institution earlier this year.

Court heard that on March 16, 2025, at approximately 1:15 p.m., Bracebridge OPP received a call from Beaver Creek staff reporting that two inmates were unaccounted for. The pair had walked off the property, up a hill, and into the surrounding forest.

The OPP Emergency Response Team and K9 Unit were deployed and began tracking the men through deep snow. Roughly an hour later, officers located the pair about one kilometre from the facility. Police also found broken pieces of tennis rackets the inmates had fashioned into makeshift snowshoes in an effort to move more easily through the terrain.

During the arrest, officers recovered 74 vape pens and two canisters of nitrous oxide in the inmates’ possession. Both men were taken back into custody and charged.

Cobb’s matter was adjourned for sentencing.
