It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Lawrence ‘Laurie’ Eugene Wheeler on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, in Bracebridge, Ontario, at the age of 85.
Laurie will be missed by his beloved wife, Dorothy Battaglia. He was the dear father of Teri-Anne Wheeler of Digby, Nova Scotia, Tammy Lalonde (Adam) of North Bay, and Timothy Wheeler of Gravenhurst. He will never be forgotten by his honorary daughter, Eileen Fisher of Huntsville. He was the proud grandpa of ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Laurie was predeceased by his siblings Borden (late Dolly), Florence (late Leo), Lorne, Doris (late Bill), Reg, Frank (late Joan), Ray, and Carl. He will be remembered fondly by his sister-in-law Howie Wheeler and by many nieces, nephews and their families.
Lawrence was the son of the late Horace and Rowena (nee Curran) Wheeler. He was born on February 22, 1940, in Thornbury and then raised in Meaford. In his younger years, Laurie loved to play baseball; he came close to pitching a perfect game a few times. He enjoyed sharing stories and showing off newspaper clippings from his years of success in baseball. Laurie was proud to wear his Veteran jacket and Cross, and was a member of the Huntsville Legion. He had many great stories from his time spent as a surveyor on the highways. Laurie was a wonderful dancer and looked forward to any opportunity to dance with his wife and his daughters. He enjoyed playing pool, swimming, writing poetry, and telling jokes. Laurie was a fun-loving man who valued his family; he will be missed by many.
A graveside service will be conducted at Lakeview Cemetery in Meaford on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 at 1 p.m. Please bring a baseball to the service in memory of Laurie if you are able.
