As new Bracebridge resident (5 years now) and a background in the taxi industry, I fear our taxi industry is greatly misunderstood.
At first I spent a lot of time playing cards at the senior center in Bracebridge and hearing seniors complaining how hard it was to get a taxi. As i fast approach 80, I understand maybe not being able to drive could put me in the same position so I have driven taxi locally as well as dispatched and find it disturbing how fragile things are.
Finding drivers wanting to work ( like many businesses in town are ) and the need of many seniors ( and non seniors ) for this service is scary. Many call for a taxi thinking it will be there in 5 minutes when sometimes it could be a couple of hours, if at all. Appointments are missed because of this as well as shopping, or eating out or party going.
This past winter, Murrays taxi was the only 24 hour service around and places like Bala, Port Carling and Gravenhurst were non-existing. Just expressing my view, but maybe stiring the pot also.
