The Township of Muskoka Lakes has announced a pilot project for Lock Street in Port Carling that will see the street converted to a pedestrian only space this summer.
Beginning July 1, 2022 through September 6, 2022, Lock Street in Port Carling will be closed to vehicular traffic. During this time, Lock Street will be a safe pedestrian space to connect with friends and family alike. The new pedestrian area will feature picnic tables ready for takeout from a local restaurant and life-sized board games.
“We consistently heard from the community during the development of the CIP the need for more pedestrian safe spaces and connections in the downtowns. Lock Street will be great place for people to gather safely and enjoy the beautiful surroundings that Muskoka Lakes has to offer,” said Mayor Phil Harding. “We are also excited to be working with the District of Muskoka on the installation of pedestrian crosswalks.”
On July 1, 2022, Canada Day, the community is invited to the Lock Street Kick Off Event happening from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. The event will include a Free Mayor’s BBQ, live music, life-sized board games and of course an official ribbon cutting. Stay tuned throughout the summer for future events as they are announced.
