An ambitions and innovative group of students recently took home top prize in a schoolboard-wide contest.
Throughout the month of March, 11 Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) Grade 7/8 classrooms across the Board participated in the Grizzly Cubs, Georgian College Innovators Challenge.
The challenge had students learn about the 17 United Nations sustainable development goals and pick one that aligned with their values. Students were then tasked to come up with a solution to achieve one of the goals, and display the solution in a marketing item of their choice using creativity.
Some of the TLDSB student solutions included:
Goal #14 Life Below Water: a student created a vending machine that accepts used single-use plastics and gives back gift certificates to local restaurants and shops.
Goal #13 Climate action: students designed a solar power car to offset harmful emissions from vehicles.
Goal #3 Good health and wellbeing: a student designed a product that wraps around you and is meant to feel exactly the same as a human hug.
Goal #2 Zero Hunger: a student created a seed bank, run by women, to encourage self-sufficiency.
On June 1, Ms. Allison’s Grade 7/8 classroom at Macaulay Public School were told they won the challenge on behalf of TLDSB. The winning team received a $75 gift card to purchase items for their classroom.
